3.1.4 Searching for remaining entries in the registry file
If SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server 2000 cannot be installed although
the directories are uninstalled and/or cleaned, then there could be entries
remaining in the operating system's registry file. One reason for this could be
that a software program has not uninstalled successfully.
Follow these steps to search for and delete remaining program entries:
Important
The information here is based upon SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server
2005. These represent all the database versions described in Chapter 2.2
"Database requirements" from page 2-4.
1 Open the registry file editor by selecting "[start] > Run..." to open the dialogue
box of the same name.
2 Type "regedit" and confirm your entry with [OK].
The registry editor will open.
Tip
Back up the registry file before making any changes.
Entries in this file form the backbone of the operating system which is highly
sensitive to unintended entries which may lead to the system failing
completely.
In the registry editor select "File > Export..." to create a backup file. To restore
a saved backup of the registry file refer to the operating system's manual.
3 Select "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE".
4 Select "Search…" from the "Edit" menu.
5 Enter a search word, e.g. "sql" and click on [Search].
Press F3 to continue searching.
Caution
Only delete an entry if you know what you are doing or if you have at least one
backup of the registry file. Otherwise you will risk losing access to the computer
and thus to all saved data.
6 Carefully check any entry found before deleting it via the shortcut menu.
Search the registry file (F3) until all unnecessary database entries are deleted.
7 Close the registry editor.
8 Restart the computer before installing SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server
2005.
Some changes and entries will only take effect after the computer has been
rebooted.
